432Hz vs 528Hz - What's the Difference?

If you spend any time exploring frequency music, you will come across these two numbers again and again.

432Hz is often described as a more natural tuning, while 528Hz has acquired associations with healing, transformation and positive energy.

The claims surrounding both frequencies are considerably less certain than they sometimes appear online. More importantly, 432Hz and 528Hz aren't really two versions of the same thing.

Understanding that difference makes choosing between them much simpler.

They are not the same kind of thing

This is the point that often gets lost.

** 432Hz is usually a tuning reference. It describes where the note A above middle C is placed, with the other notes in the music tuned relative to it.

Modern concert pitch commonly uses A = 440Hz. If the same piece is instead tuned with A = 432Hz, the entire piece is shifted slightly lower - by around 32 cents, or roughly a third of a semitone.

So when you listen to music described as "432Hz", you aren't necessarily listening to a continuous 432Hz tone. You may simply be hearing music tuned slightly lower than the common 440Hz reference.

** 528Hz is generally used differently. It is one of the frequencies included in the modern Solfeggio set and may be incorporated as a sustained tone, drone or tonal element around which a recording is created.

So one usually describes the tuning of an entire piece, while the other refers to a particular frequency incorporated into the music.

They are different approaches, and they can create very different listening experiences.

What is the story behind 432Hz?

There are numerous claims surrounding 432Hz.

You may have read that it is mathematically connected with nature, that ancient musicians universally tuned their instruments to it, or that 440Hz replaced it for questionable reasons.

The history is considerably less mysterious.

Musical pitch varied substantially before international standardisation. Different cities, orchestras, churches and instruments could use noticeably different reference pitches. There wasn't one universal ancient tuning from which modern music departed.

432Hz was one of a number of reference pitches proposed and used at different times.

A = 440Hz eventually became an international standard during the twentieth century, giving musicians and instrument manufacturers a common reference.

Claims connecting 432Hz with planetary movements, ancient monuments or other natural constants are much harder to substantiate and often depend on particular choices of measurement, units or numerical interpretation.

None of that means you can't prefer music tuned to 432Hz.

Some listeners describe it as warmer, softer or more relaxed than the same music at 440Hz. Research comparing the two remains limited, and the audible pitch difference is relatively small.

But musical preference doesn't need an extraordinary scientific explanation.

If you prefer how a piece sounds at 432Hz, that's a perfectly good reason to listen to it.

What about 528Hz?

528Hz has accumulated perhaps even more extraordinary claims.

Within the modern Solfeggio tradition, it is commonly associated with transformation, love and positive energy. You may also encounter claims that 528Hz can repair DNA or produce specific biological effects.

There isn't reliable scientific evidence establishing claims of that kind, and we don't present them as fact.

That doesn't make 528Hz meaningless as a listening choice.

The associations surrounding 528Hz have become meaningful to many listeners. Choosing a recording with a particular intention can become part of meditation, reflection or simply taking some time away from everything else.

Musically, 528Hz lies slightly above C5 in standard equal temperament when A is tuned to 440Hz. How prominent that frequency feels in a recording depends entirely on how the music has been composed and produced around it.

A 528Hz recording can therefore be warm, bright, spacious, meditative or deeply atmospheric. The number alone doesn't determine the character of the music.

So what is the practical difference?

This is where things become much simpler.

** 432Hz music usually refers to music whose overall tuning has been shifted slightly lower than the common A = 440Hz reference.

** 528Hz music usually refers to a composition that incorporates or centres around the 528Hz frequency.

Neither description tells you whether the resulting recording will be relaxing, stimulating, sparse, melodic or suitable for sleep.

Those qualities depend much more on the composition itself - its tempo, instrumentation, dynamics, harmony, texture and production.

That's why two different 528Hz recordings can feel completely different from one another.

And it's why choosing between 432Hz and 528Hz based solely on what each number is supposed to "do" can miss the most important part: the music.

How to compare them

The easiest approach is simply to listen.

If you want to hear the effect of 432Hz tuning specifically, ideally compare the same piece at A = 440Hz and A = 432Hz. Keep the volume similar and give yourself enough time to get past the novelty of switching between them.

With 528Hz recordings, you're more likely to be comparing completely different compositions, so remember that your preference may have as much to do with the music surrounding the frequency as with 528Hz itself.

You don't need to decide that one is better.

You might prefer 432Hz music in the evening and a particular 528Hz recording during meditation. Another listener may feel completely differently.
